Polka Dots!

The other day, I wore my favorite dress I've gotten from Laura's Vintage. My mom bought it for me while she was here visiting this summer and it's all my I Love Lucy dreams come true.

I wore it to the vet for my miniature schnauzer Pearl's annual exam (it went well, free of parasites and her seizure med levels are good!). And then, I went to Panera with my husband for lunch afterwards. It was such a nice day--70s!

I love how this dress plays peek-a-boo with my back tattoo.

Only Photograph What You Love

Yesterday I took a long walk down to the Empire State Plaza and it was warmer than I thought it was going to be! I ended up having to take a quick cold shower when I arrived home to cool down and wash away all the sweat. Ick!

I ended up taking my new-to-me Yashica Mat LM twin lens camera with me to get a few snapshots. I feel like I ended up overexposing most of them... but we'll see when I get them developed.
I definitely got quite a few double takes walking down to the Plaza. It's not really everyday that someone dresses like they're straight out of the 1950s here.

I'll make sure to post whatever photos come out well that I took on my long walk! Hopefully at least one comes out alright.

Watercolors of Pets!

I haven't updated in ages because I've been so busy since I've begun to paint custom pet portraits as a side-business.

It all started because I painted a little 4x6" watercolor portrait of Pearl and asked everyone who follows me on Instagram whether or not they'd like me to sell custom pet portraits. And it was a resounding Yes!

The Pearl Portrait that started it all!

From there I've had 17 portraits commissioned since then!

These are just some of the portraits I've done for people! And there's more in the queue!

I typically do one portrait every morning from 9:30 am to about 12:30pm and work Monday through Thursday. Occasionally, I'll paint on Friday morning as well if the customer needs it to be shipped out by that Saturday.  Otherwise, I take my weekend on Thursday afternoon til Monday morning.

They're super fun to do and I enjoy it. So, why not!

Let me know if you want to commission a portrait of your beloved pet!

Fashions Fade, Style is Eternal

Pearl and I went to Laura's Vintage today because she's started carrying Pinup Girl Clothing! And I wanted to give her a little watercolor painting I did of Pearl wearing cat eye glasses.

Pearl pretty much stays in her bag when I go anywhere. It's easier when I'm in stores that allows dogs because she's better behaved. Otherwise, she'd talk to everyone about everything (I say talk because she barks at people until they pet her). She even got a whole Pupperoni from a little old lady on our walk to the store. Spoiled puppy!

She's ridiculous really.

Let me just say that Laura's Vintage is my absolute favourite vintage shop here in Upstate New York. It's located on 19 Ridge St in Glens Falls, New York. And, I don't know what I would have done if I had not learned of her store. Since it's a bit of a jaunt, I'm not able to make it over there as often as I would like but when I do, I always find something! I'm pretty sure 90% of my wardrobe has been bought here.

I could literally spend all day in her shop if I could. Every time I go in, I find something else that I hadn't noticed was there when I was in last. And all the vintage packaging, deadstock, vintage tags, it's heaven.

And now that she carries Pinup Girl Clothing, she can accommodate so many more sizes! If she doesn't have your size in whatever style you want, she'll order it for you. How more perfect could this shop get?!
She even fixed my brooch by replacing a rhinestone!

About 60% of my outfit today is from her store.

A Walk to the Flea Market

Today was the opening day for the new Troy Flea Market and we went to check it out and I'm so glad we did! There were a handful of merchants there and I wanted to buy so many things.

My gorgeous husband indulged me in letting me snap a photo of him.

There were quite a few booths with vintage clothing and vintage housewares.

This is Metropolis Vintage's booth and I ended up snapping up a scarf and two 1950s dresses.
Such great prices that I only spent $33 for all of that! I'm glad I brought my measuring tape to make sure the dresses would fit. Also, if you spend more than $25, you can use your card.

Top from DollMeUpDarling
Scarf tied on purse from Troy Flea Market
Purse from TJMaxx
Shoes from Steve Madden

I've been wearing these tops from Doll Me Up Darling so often because it's been so hot lately here in Upstate New York! And putting up my hair in a bun and throwing a scarf over it helps keep my hair off my neck while not having to sleek back my hair with a thousand bobby pins. Once it cools down here, I promise I'll have more variety in my outfits!

Plant Roses and Lavender For Luck

Or paint them.

Yesterday, I finally received my new Aquash water brushes in the mail and I just had to try them out this morning because I was so excited. And since I had bought lavender from the Enchanted Florist yesterday I decided to give it a go!

I was so absorbed in painting that I forgot my cup of tea on the coffee table. And once I figured out that I had forgotten it, I had to chug lukewarm tea so it wouldn't go to waste. And there are few things worse than lukewarm tea.

This new brush is now my absolute favourite brush for watercolor. I don't need a little cup of water for rinsing out the brush between color changes and all I have to do is squeeze the brush to get a little bit of water to blend! It's amazing and I don't know how I went without it all this time. It will definitely come in handy when I go walking with my sketchbook and little pallets of Winsor&Newton watercolors. And I love how the small brush is able to give me such detail when painting. I can't tell you how much I love it.

I couldn't have a post without an adorable photo of Pearl, though, because how could I not?!

Now, I also got some Strathmore watercolor postcards in that same package yesterday and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a contest where you'd be able to win a postcard from me with an original watercolor painting on it by me? They wouldn't be very fancy or anything and probably just little paintings of flowers or brownstones in my neighborhood with a little letter on the back from me. The contest would take place on my Instagram and not until I've actually painted the postcards. Would anyone be interested in something like that? Leave me a comment and let me know on either this post or my Instagram!

A Kiss To Build a Dream On

Today I decided to walk down to the Enchanted Florist because I heard they had some bunches of lavender and I wanted to fill our apartment with that lovely scent because it's one of my absolute favorites (plus I want to do a watercolor study of it tomorrow). Luckily they had 4 bunches left!

It was such a great day today weather wise that I couldn't let myself pass it up and hurriedly got dressed and headed out! Pearl got way more smiles and compliments than I did, which is as it should be. She's darn cute!

The Enchanted Florist is located on Columbia street just off Pearl street and it has the most beautiful store front ever.

While trying to take a photo of my bunches of lavender with Pearl while sitting on a bench in Tricentennial Park, I accidentally got my skirt completely wet from my flowers. So, I had to sit there for a bit to dry off and Pearl really enjoyed the view!

I eventually got a good photo with both Pearl and the lavender even though she much preferred to people watch than look at me.

Now I'm back at home with the windows and back door open to let the nice breeze air out the apartment.

Back In Your Own Backyard

Or park! My husband and I decided to go to the dog park at Washington Square Park today after taking our miniature schnauzer, Pearl, to the vet this morning for her annual checkup.

It was quite hot and humid and Pearl didn't even pay any attention to the other dogs because she was so miserable. So, we decided to head home and chill out in the A/C. But not before we took a few photos of my outfit for today!

Scarf and belt from Laura's Vintage
Top from Doll Me Up Darling
Purse from flea market at Aunt Katie's Attic
Sunglasses from Fossil
Earring made from Princess Phone keychains
And finally, the infamous tartan pants are from LeBunnyShoppe on Etsy!

It's been quite a while since I've updated because of just being busy and not thinking to photograph my outfits! I'll try to be better at that from now on.

My Oklahoma Trip!

Some of you might know that I went to Oklahoma to visit my mother last month around the time of my birthday. I met with a ton of my friends and family but sadly didn't meet up with everyone that I wanted because of limited time.

My main activities were shopping and eating. I honestly didn't do anything else. Haha.

I bought all my vintage from Cheap Thrills (my absolute favourite vintage shop in Tulsa) and  the shoes were from Ross Dress for Less (I wish there was a Ross in Upstate New York). And my mom gave me the Silvertone radio and Starline suitcase!

I also bought some embroidery patterns and supplies from Owl&Drum.

Not to mention, I celebrated my 28th birthday while there and my chinese food takeout wished me a Happy Birthday.

Sorry I haven't updated with a recent outfit post in a while. It's been terribly cold and I've been a baby about taking photos outdoors! But, I'll post more regularly soon.

Why I don't speak to my father.

As my upcoming trip to Oklahoma approaches, I've been thinking about my father more and more. It's not something I like, but it's there because Oklahoma is where my family lives and thus, my father. And I know it's something that people don't talk about, estrangement from family members. Airing dirty laundry and all that, but I feel like more people should talk about it. That way those of us that do shut out a parent don't feel quite alone in doing so.

I've been estranged from my father since my wedding in 2011. I decided to cut him out of my life not because I want to cause him harm but to prevent more harm caused to me. When I first learned that my father was cheating on my mother (though I didn't really know how to process or recognize what it was then), I was in the 8th grade. I had to do a paper on the computer for a class and I found screenshots of naked women from Yahoo! Messenger. I remember it very clearly because the woman has a flower (possibly a rose?) on her front shoulder. I remember closing the computer after deleting everything I found and tried to just forget about it because I didn't really comprehend what I was seeing. I convinced myself that it was a mistake that it was there and just deleted it. But, every time I would go on the computer I would find more.

That's when a password was put on the computer by my father.

I remember when I was quite little, my dad took my brother and I to Eastland Mall to get my brother a video game but it wasn't his birthday or anything. I got really upset that my brother was getting something and I wasn't and asked for a Tweety bird stuffed animal. I couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 and I threw a tantrum and ended up getting it anyway but my dad made me feel horrible about it. Later, I found out that when my mom found my dad's porn stash, he'd bribe my brother to take the fall by buying him video games.

When we got a DVR for the television, I would find porn recorded. Since I was brought up very very strictly, I deleted it every time I saw it... which happened to be very frequently. Then, my dad got a separate external hard drive for his porn so I wouldn't find it on the DVR.

Since before I can remember, my father always said horrible things about my mom to me. He'd say she was such a bitch and a vain horrible person and my brother was just like her. But, I was just like him and he was so happy that he had me to talk to. And of course I was happy to be spending time with my dad and maybe I was angry at my mom for something inconsequential like having to clean my room or do the dishes or do housework. So, at first I liked the attention my dad was giving me and felt great that he talked to me like an adult. However, as I grew older the things he was saying didn't match up to the things I was seeing. Sure, my mom accused him of cheating, but it ended up being true. He was cheating. He did look at other women while we were out. He did say insensitive things to her. Of course she'll have something to say about that.

As I went away to college, I started to distance myself from my dad because all he would talk about was how horrible my mom was and how he wishes he could just divorce her. But, he wanted to wait until my Mema and Deda (my mom's parents) were dead so he could get the inheritance money and then leave her. So, I would stay in my room every time I visited home if my mom wasn't there. I just didn't want to hear it.

Then, when my mom announced she wanted to divorce my father because he was cheating on her, my father sat me down on the bed and said, "You don't believe I would cheat on your mother, right?" And made me feel like the horrible person for thinking such a thing of him. He sat me down on my bed and looked me straight in the eyes and asked me if I thought he would cheat on my mom.

I did believe he was cheating on my mother. I found web profiles with his name and information with a photograph of his penis on it looking for hook ups with women in the Tulsa area. I found those screenshots when I was in the 8th grade on the family computer. And later, I found out he was seeing a woman at the time named Melissa (whom he married VERY shortly after getting divorced) and she was coming over to the house while my mom worked her second job at night. I learned this not only from my mom but from the neighbors. They had seen her. He wouldn't let my mom see his activity on the cell phone bill, as well. That is when I started to really believe he was a cheating arsehole. I was in complete denial before that. But the fact that he wouldn't let my mom have access to his phone activity on his cell phone confirmed that he was hiding something (I know, I know... but I was in denial.. I wanted to think the best of my dad). He would also tell me he had to go "out" and wouldn't tell me where he was going and not return for hours.

All the while my dad kept saying, "I never cheated on your mom! I'm the victim! She abused me not the other way around!" He still keeps up with these lies to this day.

And that is why I am estranged from my father. I have forgiven him for what he's done, but I won't let that kind of manipulation into my life. And I'm positive he tells everyone who will listen that I don't talk to him anymore because my mom tells me "lies"... but that is simply not true. I don't speak to my father because of the things I witnessed myself. Sadly, my brother believes everything my dad says and thus is not a part of my life either.

Emotional abuse is still abuse and that is exactly what my father put our family through.

Younger than Springtime.

Today, my husband and I helped at my in-law's church for Lemonade on the Lawn after service as a favor to my mother-in-law since she's up in Maine at the moment. It gave me the opportunity to wear my favourite sheer 1950s dress!

The coral colour really reminds me of the decade and pairing it with light accessories is essential. I went with the nude shoes because I felt black would just make everything look too heavy.

Love how my tattoo looks through it!

I love the rhinestone buttons and it's so great that they're nice and clear instead of how old rhinestones sometimes get cloudy with age.

Pearl didn't seem too enthused to be in my outfit photos. Ha, she had a pretty rough morning because of her separation anxiety of not getting to go into church with us. But she was an honorary guest at Lemonade on the Lawn in her bag!
